How do NBA Point Spreads Work?

A point spread is how the sportsbooks make the game more even and simply put the point spread adds, or subtracts points from a team’s final score depending on which side you placed a bet

Remember the goal of the sportsbook is to get equal amounts of money wagered on each team. If the sportsbook can get equal bet amounts on both sides they are guaranteed not to lose money. The way they entice bettors to bet both sides is the point spread.

When you look at a game at a sportsbook you will see one team has a positive number next to their name and the other team has a negative number.

The team with the positive number is the underdog, and at the end of the game you take the underdog’s final score and you add the point spread. If the underdog now wins the game with the point spread added, they have “covered the spread” and a bet on the underdog would win

The team with a negative number is the favorite, and at the end of the game you take the favorite’s final score and you subtract the point spread. If the favorite wins the game with the point spread subtracted they have “covered the spread” and a bet on the favorite would win.

NBA Point Spreads Explained

An NBA point spread is how many points a team can either win or lose by to win a bet.

For example, if the NBA spread is (-2) your team will need to win by at least three points to win the bet. If the team you bet on has a point spread of +4.5 it means the team can lose by four points and you can still cover the spread and win the bet.

How do NBA Odds Work?

NBA odds are how likely each team is to win the game, either against the spread, moneyline or the over under. All bet types have odds and it tells a bettor how much they stand to profit if their bet wins.

There are different types of ways to display odds but the NBA odds you look at on a sportsbook are American odds. Although understanding odds can be difficult at first, once you get the hang of it, it becomes simple.

Simply put NBA odds show two main things, how statistically likely a team is to win the game, and how much you will need to wager to win $100, or how much profit you gain by wagering $100.

If you are looking at a money line and see the number is (-150) next to the team you would like to bet, this means they are the favorite. In American odds the (-150) denotes that a better would have to wager $150 to profit $100.

If the odds are a positive number, for example +150 this means you would profit $150 on a $100 bet on this team.

The more negative the odds, the more statistically likely that outcome happen, according to the sportsbook. A bettor must wager more money for the right to place that bet, since the sportsbook believes the outcome is statistically likely to occur

The more positive the odds, the less statistically likely that outcome will happen, according to the sportsbook. A bettor does not have to wager as much to win a higher amount because the sportsbook does not believe it will happen.
